Glasgow idiocy: Climate change isn’t remotely the world’s No. 1 problem

The hype over the Glasgow climate summit is the usual over-the-top nonsense, exemplified by John Kerry, President Biden’s special climate envoy, calling it the “last best hope for the world to get its act together.” In reality, it’s a rally for idiocy.
Climate change is real but not remotely the “existential threat to humanity” that Biden and so many others claim. The numbers from the United Nations reports make that obvious, as economist Bjorn Lomborg keeps noting: Global economic growth through the year 2100 would leave the average person 450 percent richer than today; climate change (if we do nothing) knocks that down to 434 percent.
Extreme weather is not growing more common, and an ever-richer world handles it better: Natural disasters of all kinds killed roughly half a million people a year a century ago; this year it’s on track to be about 6,000.
Meanwhile, COVID has taken nearly 5 million lives worldwide: An international effort to vaccinate the globe would be a far better way to spend the funds that will go instead to foolish climate policies.
Plus, the effort to determine how the virus got started, and so help prevent future pandemics, is stalled. And that’s just one of the world issues that deserves the hoopla dedicated to climate posturing.
It’s not even the only worry centering on China, whose aggression against Taiwan could trigger a new world war, while the collapse of its real-estate bubble could destabilize the global economy.
Then again, Beijing is also the No. 1 “villain” when it comes to growing carbon emissions, the likely driver of climate change. But the Glasgow gabfest won’t move China (nor India) to greatly change its ways because its new coal plants are crucial to its continued economic growth. (Worse, getting Beijing to pretend it will cut its emissions forces the rest of the world to overlook China’s many crimes, from its slow-motion Uyghur genocide to its oppression of Tibet and Hong Kong.)
Instead, Glasgow will resemble the 2015 Paris gathering, which finished with “accords” wherein countries voluntarily set carbon-cutting targets, which Western governments then used to justify spending billions to subsidize renewables and crack down on their own fossil-fuel use.
Climate warriors never mention how the poor disproportionately pay the price for that, via higher utility bills and lost job opportunities.
Heck, burning cleaner natural gas instead of coal or oil has been a huge carbon-cutting win for the United States, one that had huge employment and other economic benefits as the fracking boom made the nation a net energy exporter. But climate warrior Biden has made us import-dependent again — and now is reduced to begging OPEC to up its production to bring pump prices down.
People don’t want to burn the vast amounts of cash needed to go net-zero-carbon by 2050, as greens demand. French President Emmanuel Macron’s anti-carbon edicts triggered the “yellow vest” rebellion, forcing him to back down. Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison is talking green now, yet he won his job while vowing to oppose extreme, job-killing climate policies.
But the world media swoon over the idea of climate apocalypse, so 20,000 diplomats, activists and business powerbrokers are jetting to Glasgow to win some nice headlines — and the hypocrisy behind those huge-and-unnecessary carbon footprints is only a taste of this ginormous folly.
