Patriots’ Brandon Bolden reveals cancer battle that threatened career

Brandon Bolden experienced a scare unlike anything he had faced on the football field.

After his Patriots fell to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII in early 2018, the veteran running back quickly put his free agency in the rearview. He was told he had epidermoid carcinoma, a form of skin cancer.

Bolden underwent surgery and said he temporarily lost function on the right side of his face — and went on to play all 16 games with Miami, with whom he signed.

He is now cancer-free and now back with the Patriots. He revealed the bout on social media this week, sharing pictures of his treatment.

“I was messing with my son and my little brother about this. I actually looked in the mirror and was like, ‘I got my full face back,'” Bolden told reporters on Thursday, according to the team’s website. “That’s what made me go through the pictures and everything else, just to show I had cancer and I did not think I was going to be able to play another down, and here I am going on four years later after having surgery. I’m still working strong.”

In revealing his cancer battle, the 31-year-old Bolden added more context to his opting out of the 2020 season because of COVID-19 concerns. He is back a season later and has totaled 540 rushing and receiving yards in 15 games this season.

All after he was not sure if he would ever be able to play again.

“It took a lot,” Bolden said. “There was a lot of naysaying from doctors and everything else. [I’m] just here to prove people wrong and continue to grow and get stronger.”
