A rookie in the 2023 SI Swimsuit Issue, Lauren Chan traveled to the Dominican Republic for her magazine spread, where she worked with photographer James Macari. While this was the Toronto native’s first time in front of the camera with the brand, she’s a fashion industry expert and has worked as a model, writer and editor. Chan, founder of luxury womenswear brand Henning, also used her magazine feature to announce a major life moment.
“It was a real-time embodiment of a page turn. It was like, whoa, that’s her. That’s the new me. That’s who I’m stepping into. That’s who I’m so proud to be,” Chan previously told SI Swimsuit of her time on location. “And I think that I’m so moved by all of my involvement in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit as well because of the team and community and friends and family and cheerleaders that have supported me throughout this.”
Her photo shoot in the Cap Cana area of the Dominican Republic was largely influenced by the trendy Barbiecore aesthetic, which is evident in the bright and playful swimsuits Chan wore on set. What Is a Monokini?
A monokini is basically the best of both a bikini and a one-piece swimsuit in a single garment. Rather than having two separate pieces, as a bikini does, a monokini typically features cut-outs to give it that two-piece feel, while still being one singular connected garment.
When Was the Monokini Invented?
The monokini originated in the mid-1960s and was the world’s first topless swimsuit that consisted of just bottoms and two thin connected straps up top. Today’s modern version isn’t quite as revealing and allows you to make a statement without baring too much skin.
