Washington Football Team safety Deshazor Everett was involved in a car crash in Virginia on Thursday night that killed a female passenger, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said on Friday morning.

Everett was driving in Loudoun County, which sits just outside of Washington D.C., around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday when police said the vehicle “left the right side of the roadway, struck several trees and rolled over.”

The passenger, a 29-year-old woman, was taken to a local hospital where she later died of her injuries. Everett was taken to a hospital, too, and sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash is still being investigated.

“We’ve been made aware of an automobile accident last night involving Deshazor Everett,” the Washington Football Team said in a statement on Friday morning. “A passenger in his vehicle lost their life and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends who lost a loved one. Deshazor is currently in the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been affected by this tragedy.”

Washington said it has contacted the NFL about the incident and is working with local authorities.

Everett, 29, is in his seventh season with Washington, and has recorded 10 total tackles off the bench this year. He’s in the second year of a three-year, $6 million contract with the team.

“It’s very sad to hear the news,” Washington coach Ron Rivera said Friday, via the Washington Post’s Nicki Jhabvala. “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the young lady.”
